3 Quick Tips for Faster Cutoffs and Relays in Baseball
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

In baseball, a well-executed cutoff or relay throw can completely shift the momentum of a game. The energy from making that perfect play spreads throughout the team, lifting spirits and changing the course of the inning. On the flip side, if the play falls short and the runner is safe, it can have the opposite effect—undermining the team’s focus and putting them on the back foot.

Every second counts when executing these plays, so efficiency in your movements is crucial. By positioning yourself strategically and thinking ahead, you can drastically improve your relay time. Here are three simple tips that can shave precious seconds off your cutoffs and relays and help you make those game-changing plays.

1. Catch the Ball on Your Glove-Hand Side

The first key to a quicker relay is catching the ball on your glove-hand side. By positioning yourself to catch the ball here, you’ll save valuable time, as this allows you to make a smoother transition into the throw. It’s a simple adjustment, but one that pays off by putting you in a better position to execute a strong, accurate throw to the next base.

2. Turn Towards Your Glove Side

Turning toward your glove side—rather than the opposite direction—cuts out unnecessary steps. Turning the other way requires extra foot movement, which not only wastes time but also disrupts your momentum, making the throw less accurate. By turning toward your glove side, you’ll maintain fluidity in your movements, leading to a quicker and stronger throw to your teammate.

3. Get Into Throwing Position Early

Getting your body into throwing position before you even catch the ball can drastically improve your reaction time. Of course, you need to read the play and know where the ball is headed, but once you have a good read, start positioning yourself for the throw. This readiness will make the entire relay process faster and more efficient, so you don’t waste time adjusting once the ball is in your glove.

Final Thoughts

These tips may seem simple, but when practiced consistently, they’ll make a world of difference in your cutoffs and relays. By thinking ahead and positioning your body correctly, you’ll eliminate unnecessary movements and make quicker, more accurate throws. With these small adjustments, you’ll have more success in cutting down baserunners and help shift the momentum in your favor when the game is on the line.
