4 Drills to Master Ball Control and Sole Roll Dribbling

In soccer, the ability to control the ball while maneuvering through tight spaces is crucial for evading defenders and maintaining possession. One of the most effective techniques to develop this skill is using the sole of your foot, also known as sole roll dribbling. Here are four drills designed to enhance your ball mastery and help you incorporate sole roll dribbling into your game.

Drill 1: Sole Roll Pyramid

Key Points:

  • Set up three cones in a triangle, spaced one to two feet apart.

  • Keep your knees slightly bent and stay light on your feet.

  • Imagine the ground is extremely hot to encourage quick, controlled movements.

  • Perform sole rolls while weaving through the cone triangle.

  • To improve touch, bring the cones closer together, forcing tighter dribbling.

Drill 2: Sole Roll Tick Tocks

Key Points:

  • Perform two sole rolls to each side, followed by a tick-tock dribble (alternating touches with the inside of your feet).

  • Set up two cones to create a tight space, simulating real game conditions.

  • As you perform tick-tocks, be sure to check around with your eyes to improve awareness.

  • Focus on weaving through the cones with controlled sole rolls.

  • Adjust the distance between the cones to challenge your ball control in confined spaces.

Drill 3: Continuous Traveling Sole Rolls

Key Points:

  • Find a larger space and execute continuous sole rolls, traveling down and back.

  • Use both your left and right foot for balance and coordination.

  • Keep your shoulders slightly angled forward to ensure fluid movement.

  • Maintain a fast pace, but always keep the ball under control.

  • Make sure you touch the ball with every step, maintaining consistent contact.

Drill 4: Freestyle Dribbling with Sole Rolls

Key Points:

  • Head to an open field and practice freestyle dribbling, incorporating sole rolls into your moves.

  • Use both feet to dribble, frequently changing direction and pace.

  • Bring a friend along to defend and see how many moves you can execute using the soles of your feet.

  • Keep the practice fun by challenging yourself to score goals while using sole rolls.
